Club Captain – Expressions of Interest

As many of you are aware our current Club Captain, the fabulous Matt Millward, is moving to Brisbane towards the end of March. This means we have some pretty big shoes to fill.

While several members have informally indicated an interest in this volunteer role, due to its large scope, both operationally and in terms of fostering Club culture, we are putting in place a process for candidates who would be interested in nominating for this role.

As Club Captain you work alongside the Club Manager and the Board to support our operational Committees in the delivery of our life guarding; SAR; surf-lifesaving sport and Junior Surf programs. As a Board member, you bring that volunteer perspective to the table and play a role in our connection to the wider SLSNZ organisation. In addition to being across the Club’s operational activities, you are a key custodian of the Club culture and values. Not only will you live and model our values, but will lead certain key Club-wide events, and ensure that our WhangaFam is connected across our highly active Club members (lifeguards, sport athletes, nippers, coaches, Committee and Board members); our wider membership and friends and supporters of the Club.

For those interested in the opportunities and challenges of being our Club Captain the first step is to contact Matt on 027 528 3437 who will provide a more detailed description of the role and tasks involved and share his experiences. Following that would be a formal written Expression of Interest and a discussion with the Club President and Club Manger – who both work very closely with the Club Captain during the year.  From there nominees will be voted on/confirmed at the AGM held on the Easter weekend.

Expressions of Interest – Committees

Keen to get Involved??

Support or be part of one of our Volunteer Committees

Our volunteer operational Committees (Lifeguarding/SAR; Lifesaving Sport and Junior Surf) are the engine room of our Club’s core programs and activities. These Committees design our programs; organise events; oversee the Club’s seasonal employees; support and develop members; source and maintain key assets; and work with the Board on asset and operational planning and budgeting.

We are very lucky that our current hard-working Committee members are willing to do it all again in 2024/2025. However, the Club and the Committee members are always keen to bring on board new Committee members; have people perhaps “shadow” Committees to see what is involved; or simply offer some specific help to the Committee – without needing to be a member or get involved in every aspect of the Committee’s work. Many members and their families help out on a range of ad hoc activities – often across a number of our programs.

Being on, or connected to, one of our volunteer Committees is a great way for parents/whanau of our predominantly young active members to get an understanding of what they do and support them and the wider Club  – without appearing too close to their youngsters’ “summer tribe” as such!

So, if you are interested in being on a Committee, or just helping out, please contact Dide who will put you in touch with the Committee Chair – or contact any of our Committee members direct if they are known to you. If your interest is in a Committee role then please reach out before 15th March so we can have you formally appointed for 2024/2025 at our Easter AGM.
