Head Surf Sport Coach – Whangamata SLSC

Opportunity to develop, deliver and innovate

Summer on the Coromandel!

Attractive Package – Vehicle for competitions – Accommodation Option

We are looking for a special person to Head our surf sport coaching program and join the Whangafam#

WSLSC’s sport program is one of the most successful on the Coromandel and has been going from strength to strength over the last few years. Our Sport program is well integrated with our Junior Surf and Life-guarding activities – reflecting our fun and supportive one-club culture.

We have around 40 junior and senior athletes focussed on competing at a regional and national level, and a summer “pathway” program for younger members – enabling them to get a taste of our surf sport program.

The Head Coach would oversee the coaching aspects of our whole program. They would have primary responsibility for the senior squad as well as supporting/developing our assistant coaches who would focus on our Junior/Oceans and Oceans Development programs.

As Whangamatā remains the ultimate summer holiday town, our Sport program is relatively seasonal in nature – reflecting the wide geographic spread of our clubbies. This kicks-off with Pool Champ training in July-September; pre-season trainings September – December; intensive competition preparation in Dec-Feb and pre-competition refinement in Feb-March.

From an athlete coaching perspective, this entails a full-time presence at the beach Dec-Feb; with weekend (and some mid-week) training/skills sessions during the shoulder periods. In addition, our head coach would develop athlete led sessions for off-peak periods; arrange targeted technical skill camps (with outside experts) in the pre-season period; and put in place athlete-specific development plans.

Our dedicated Surf Sport Committee (in conjunction with Club administration) takes care of competition management; gear acquisition and care; and other administrative and social activities relating to the program.

In recognition of our seasonal focus, we are a great fit for potential coaches who have structured their career/work-life on a seasonal or project basis. Often this means a tertiary student; professional athlete or someone with a portfolio of aquatic focussed coaching roles. We are also proud of our record in giving emerging coaches a chance to experience running a total program. Historically, we have put in place mentor structures for the right person wanting to develop their coaching career. Previous coaches having all moved to roles in larger clubs and been exposed to SLSNZ high-performance programs.
