A Community Facility
In November 2026, local iwi Ngāti Pū blessed the opening of our newly renovated Whangamatā Surf Life Saving Club and gifted the name Hinemua to the main building. A chieftess of Hauturu (Clark Island), it is said that she swam the length of the bay to flee an invading tribe, carrying her baby in her arms. Locals can now whakapapa directly to that child and are involved in restoring the environment, stories, and mana around the local shoreline and islands. You can find out more about their restoration work here. Whangamatā Dune Protection Society • Coastal Restoration Trust of New Zealand
Giving Back to the Community
The Whangamatā Surf Life Saving Club is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit charitable organisation. All funds raised through venue hire are reinvested directly into beach safety and surf lifesaving patrols at Whangamatā Beach — helping keep our community and visitors safe.
